There are several observations that should be noted in response to the article that “Race is central to the fear and angst of the US right.” In case you have not read the article, it is posted below and you are welcomed to respond to it. The article essentially states that the “shrinking white base of the Republican Party cannot accept the country in which it now lives – so it shut it down.”  The article explains three factors for the Republican Party’s shutdown of the government: Gerrymandering (the way voting districts are drawn), the perceived beneficiaries of government spending, and Obama’s authenticity – “[There] is a sense of him being foreign, non-Christian, Muslim – and they [Republicans] wonder what really are his motives for the changes he is advancing.”

It is amazing that in the 21st Century in America, with its history, that race still divides the nation. America has still not resolved its race issue. No matter how many laws are passed, those laws will never begin to change the ideals and hate in people’s hearts. Unfortunately, there are some facts about this article that no one can deny, one being that in 2012, 92% of the Republican vote came from white people who, within 30 years, will no longer be in the majority. There is also no denying that Republican Party does not represent the demographics of the 21st Century America. In fact some Red States have voted to implement poll taxes, grandfather clauses and intelligence tests of the late 1800’s in order to sustain their political power. Furthermore, it is very difficult to understand why some Republicans are still focused on Obama’s birth certificate when the guy has been voted into office twice.

On the other hand, the non-whites in America continue to blindly follow a president that is all talk, shows practically no leadership and does almost nothing that was promise. The non-whites of America support Obama, despite his track record, because he is a man of color. To a certain point, there is an understanding why, which goes back to race and the “good ole boy network.” It is not right, but for non-whites in the U.S., who have had a history of being disenfranchised and discriminated against, it is difficult for them to not support someone that looks like them.

From us in Europe, America looks like a joke of a nation, holding the country hostage because of politics. At the end of the day, black, white, poor, rich, people’s livelihoods and families were and are impacted. And regardless, who is to blame, the Republicans are made to look really stupid at the end of the day as they submitted to Obama’s terms. Outside America, people cannot fathom a government that does not take care of its citizens as well as a government hell-bent on going to war every 3 to 5 years. In general, Obama is doing nothing more than continuing the policies set forth by his predecessors. Unfortunately, Americans will continue to be duped by race and the media’s appeal to the ignorant emotional masses as their freedoms are continually being striped.
